Why do we have a society devoted to ‘Lit & Phil’? In a society increasingly atomised and
where opportunities for informed, civil discourse are harder to find, it seems important to
offer a sense of community by coming together to discuss worthwhile issues in a spirit of
tolerance and willingness to learn. All age groups, all sections of society are welcome at the
Lit and Phil, which has been a forum for ideas in Warrington since 1870.
The whole idea of a Lit & Phil emerged in Warrington, following the golden years of the
Warrington Academy, which prospered from 1758 until 1782. So Warrington has an
important role in this style of civic engagement.
Six times every year we hold stimulating lectures followed by a lively question and answer
session on a variety of topics including science, art, history, politics, philosophy, music and
literature.
You are welcome to join us either as a member or as a guest for an individual talk.
Our evenings begin at 7.00pm, with the talk starting at 7.30pm. We meet on the first
Monday in October, November, December, February, March and April.
Our AGM is a quick fifteen-minute meeting in April which runs from 7.15 to 7.30pm.
We meet at Friars Green Methodist Church on Cairo Street in the cultural quarter of Warrington. There is a pay-and-display carpark opposite the church.
