150th Anniversary Publication
In 2023, The Warrington Literary and Philosophical Society celebrated its 150th Anniversary!
To commemorate this remarkable event, Dr Bill Cooke (President 2019-2021 and 2026-2027) has researched and written this new history. It tracks the story of the society from 1870 to 2020.
Discussing the society’s talks, he groups them by subject matter – Science, History, Philosophy, Literature and Arts – providing fresh insights into how intellectual preoccupations changed or developed over the years, as well as information on the speakers, many of whom were well known figures such as Roy Jenkins, Raymond Tallis and Prof Michael Symmons Roberts.
The Lit & Phil was formed when Victoria was Queen and Great Britain ruled the waves. In the century and a half since then the world has changed in ways unthinkable to those who came together to form the society. But along the way the Lit & Phil has provided a sounding board for people to understand their times. Indeed, the very idea of a society devoted to understanding the world in a secular way is one of Warrington’s gifts to the country.
Copies are available for £5 direct from Bill Cooke at any of our meetings. Or contact us at Warrlitphil at gmail.com and we’ll pass on your request.
